The Boot camp began to appear in the 1980's as a correctional method. They became the most wide spread in the 1990's.

However the number of youth, who died in those camps worried the lawmakers and a lot of the programs were shut down.

But beside the public programs, which was a part of the correctional system, a lot of private boot camps are still in business.

Youth being detained in these programs can only be released by the parents. Some of them are recommended by the school districts, if either parents approach them or as part of an offer in order to avoid expulsion.

More info about the boot camps used as part of the correctional system can be seen here on Wikipedia.

Since year 2000 the number of public run camp has been lowered. They have been replaced by either voluntary programs or programs with a higher degree of education and substance abuse treatment.

Our own wiki database contains information about a number of programs. Here is a link to the Boot Camp category.

There are three types of Boot camps: Residential, alternative to dayschool and at-home based:

The three featured programs on this page are all of the Residential type. Two of them are/were totally private operated. American Buffalo was a boot camp only with a lot of exercise and punishing task, LDM run a program consisting of two phases. First they run a boot camp in the wilderness around a ranch, then they move inside the town and run various community tasks combined with exercise.

The third program Eagle Academy is a kind of alternative school run by the school district and sheriff office in Belle Glade. Here the youth otherwise in risk of being sentenced of misdemeanors can apply for time in the program and get their records erased.

In our wiki section we have a number of Charter schools which are boot camps combined with day-schools. Often they are not regulated very much. It is a question about the town having a number of private school operators to run a school as cheap as possible serving students with various needs. Such a typical charter school are on record in our Wiki section: Milwaukee Leadership Training Center

Last but least a number of programs are offering "coaching" at home. A drill sergeant can be hired by About Face Youth Camp which is on record in our wiki database and known from the know closed Jenny Jones TV-shows.

Regardless of the fact that the number of boot camps have dropped in the United States, people in other countries tend to believe that they could mean a difference in crime prevention if used in their own country. Here is a link to an article from Denmark (in Danish).
