In Denmark:

These facilities are not exactly secret prisons. In fact they are meant to keep children, who has commit some type of crime out of society. In order to assure quality  in the so-called treatment they are offering while the children are doing time, they are under supervision by Danish politicians. But very often the supervision consist only a cup of coffee in the office of the manager and the line of politicians washing their hands by the sink is so long that they could reach around the globe, if they held hands:

Facilities, which has drawn attention to them by allegations made about abuse towards children.

Facility No. 1: Atlantis near the town of Naestved:

Small children on pack drill as punishment (From the Danish Television-channel TV2East - In Danish). People discovered children aged 8-11 walking alone along a Highway in the middle of the night sent out there as punishment. The walk should have been 10 kilometers. The facility was shut down after it was discovered that the politicians had ignored reports of alleged abuse for more than a year. None were punished properly due to the embarrassment of the lack of supervision.

Facility no. 2: Solhaven near the town of Farsø

Staff ripped my trousers off (From the Danish newspaper BT - In Danish). Solhaven has an intake where the youth is isolated until the staff has shown the youth that they are the strongest. The facility was ordered to report all incident of fights directly to the politicians instead of filing them in a briefcase where the politician could read them if they cared to visit the facility.

An announced visit by members of the Danish parliament was cancelled and police reports were filled against a member of the Danish parliament, so the facility is in a way off-limit for any kind of supervision today (The superintendent should control his own work) (From the Danish newspaper BT - In Danish)  The facility is the largest employer in the remote area, so the entire town in behind the facility and local criticism is not to be found due to the risk of losing jobs.

This is an article where the facility describe their approach to the treatment. <LINK>. (The road back to life - by Mikkel Hvid - In Danish)

Facility no. 3: Kanonen near the town of Randers

Violence was the purpose of the treatment. (From the Danish newspaper BT - In Danish). This article describes how a facility operates in 2007. The purpose of the intake is to address the lack of buying into the treatment by use of force. A similar kind of physical restraint is also used at Peninsula Village - Tennessee, who sponsors some facilities in Denmark.

They also use a kind of observement placement originate from WWASP, where the child has to sit up to 15 hours without moving. This tactic seems similar to the conditions told by survivors of Casa by the Sea. See this article (Forced to sit for 15 hours in a chair)

And they are not cheap. A single person did cost 165.000 DKR (About 25.000 dollars per month). WWASP takes about the same amount.

On April 17 the town council of Favrskov Kommune decide to investigate claims of abuse and unlawful free work on the staff members private properties. <LINK>

Facility no. 4: Holsteins Minde near the town of Naestved

Girl aged 9 abused by boys. (From the Danish Television-channel TV2East - In Danish). Lack of supervision made it possible for 7 boys aged less than 15 to abuse the girl in kind of sexual way. According the staff it only took place once (The one time they walked into the room by accident), but they acknowledge that they are not equipped very well to handle that kind of problems. (Sexual abuse could have been avoided). Note: I have not seen advertising anywhere for underage sextreatment only for treatment against sex with the same sex. Perhaps such treatment does not exist at all.

Facility no. 5: Egely near the town of Middelfart

This facility is the closest we in Denmark can call a Supermax prison for adolescents. The inmates is monitored 24/7. Despite the intense monitoring a girl managed to kill herself. (Girl aged 17 died at facility. From the Danish newspaper EkstraBladet - In Danish)

Facility no. 6: Aastrup Centeret near the town of Stubbekøbing

Police report filed against staff member, who kicked a child (LINK #1 LINK #2- From the Danish Television-channel TV2East - In Danish). Unfortunately for the staff member did the child record the conversation between the child and the staff member on tape. The authorities of the hometown of the child did pull the child from the facility and the staff member was reported to the police. The staff member was later fired, Link #3 From the Danish Television-channel DR - In Danish) but the well-known lack of interest made the authorities drop the increased supervision of the facility, so just how long do we have to wait before the next scandal arise? Generally:

May 29, 2007: Lack of education do often result in use of force against youth <Link> (From the Danish Radio Station DR - In Danish)

June 1, 2007: Children molest children. At least every 14 days a child is sexual molested by another child placed in a facility. 71 known cases were reported in 2006. 13 percent of the children, who had been molested had received some kind for payment for their services <Link> (From the Danish Newspaper Metro Express - In Danish)

June 21, 2007: Riot at Sofiedal near the town of Tinglev (From the Danish Radio Station DR - in Danish). The 6 staff members could not prevent the 12 to 14 teenagers between 14 and 17 years of age from trashing the place. The police were called in and the teenagers were returned the facility after spending a night in police custody.

August 6, 2007: Our secure facilities are a disgrace (From the Danish Radio Station DR - in Danish). The chairman of the Danish Social Education Worker on Sealand - Jan Vium criticizes the standard at Stevnsfortet and Bakkegaarden - two of our secure facilities.
