A simple definition is a boarding school that offers behavior modification.
There are several categories of these facilities. Some are as locked up as a prison, where the staff will use force to prevent detainees from running. Others expell detainees if they run.
Detainees are often placed there by their parents. Some are placed there by the authorities instead of serving prison time but that is not a very high percentage.
